Does live streaming on youtube hurt your channel?

Main Post:

Hey guys, I have a channel with 11k subscribers and have been live streaming on youtube once a week for over a year. I average about 7k views on my weekly long form content (ranges from 2k-240k) and about 500 views on my live streams (I get about 200 views while live, then about 300 more from the VOD)

Like any channel, I've noticed ups and downs over the months with the views on my long form content, but I do usually see a big dip in my weekly long form content when my VOD goes live. It's a sudden drop coinciding with the publication of the VOD.

I guess youtube stops pushing the long form content and starts pushing the VOD since it's newer?

The live streams rarely gain subscribers, and actually often lose 3-5 subs each time I do them. However, there is a dedicated group who come to watch the videos (around 20 people or so).

My main channel is gaming related, but it's more focused on game collecting, video essays on games, and game reviews. Any time I've posted let's plays, they have been abysmal. Obviously, my viewers don't really care about gameplay. But that's exactly what my streams are... live gameplay. Perhaps, that's the issue. They are different forms of content.

I can't help but feel that it's hurting the channel.

I really love streaming and interacting with everyone and don't want to stop. Also, my viewers get to pick the games I stream by tipping money, so we have a few games queued up to finish that I still owe to them.

What do you think?

There are a couple of alternatives available:

  1. live stream on youtube, but don't publish the VOD. I don't really want to do this.
  2. live stream on my 2nd youtube channel (has 600 subs, isn't monetized, but IS gameplay focused). No more super chats since it isn't monetized. Would contribute to getting the 4k watch hours I still need.
  3. Stream on Twitch and try to push it from my youtube channel and other social media.

I'm sure option 3 is most likely the best option. I'm just afraid of hurting that dedicated viewerbase that always comes to watch the streams.

Let me know your opinions. There isn't really good, up to date, information out there about this specific scenario.

My youtube channel is linked in my bio. You can also just search my user name on youtube or even Google.

Top Comment: I've had this exact same thought and made a change. I live stream on my main channel, unlist the VoD right after stream, then upload the VoD to a second channel that only had VoDs on it. So far it's working how I thought it would, but I still need some data to prove it. The hypothesis is: by removing the VoD from my main channel, my viewers are only going to see videos I post weekly, this keeping one audience on one channel. And those viewers who want videos and VoDs can subscribe to both channels and get what they want.

Planning my first live stream. What should I know?

Main Post:

I've never livestreamed on YouTube or any other platform before. I'm a faceless YouTuber and my channel has nearly 9,000 subscribers as of writing this. I'm planning my first livestream to be the beginning of a playthrough of Hollow Knight. Is there anything I should know before going live, or tips to keep in mind?

How do people steam pre-recorded videos as 'live' videos to YouTube?

Main Post:

I see it alot and wondering how they do it. For example, you could see a gaming channel have multiple "live" streams. One of nes games being played, one of snes etc etc. How do they do it? The videos are pre-recorded?

Could an raspberry pi be used to achieve the same? Maybe with obs studio or something?

Thanks.

Top Comment: Use a prerecorded video as a source when streaming live. Pretty straight forward if you already know how to stream. If you use OBS they have a recording option.

What happened to Reddit Live Streaming ???

Main Post:

Hi Friends,

ITs been awhile since i've seen any 'Live Broadcasts' of Bands and Musicians on Reddit (what a let down). I used to look forward to seeing Talent from all over the World---playing their instruments (from drums, to violin, to guitar etc).

  • What happened?

There was even a way to donate $ to the performers...bringin out the Best Talent on a Global Scale---- IF you ask ME...This was the Best sub-reddit on the Web.

  • What happened?

Where are Bands playing now... can you watch them play live and Donate ?

Thanks~!
